Hand woven basket with lid.
In Burundi, these baskets are used to hang from the ceiling and store food. Traditionally they are woven with banana leaves, but in Australia these materials are difficult to find so they are substituted for raffia or plastic rice bags. The baskets are made by one Burundian family: Maria, Petronia and Sylvan. They all participate in creating the baskets and also share the income.
This particular basket is made by Sylvan.
